Within this section, we have provided a suggested order for introducing letter sounds based on the Letters and Sounds teaching programme implemented in the UK in 2004. There is a wealth of teaching and learning resources that align with this programme available online.
There are 44 phonemes in English that can be presented in the following sets. Some are single letters and some are two letters together (diagraphs).
Main principles
All the letters within each sound set are introduced at the same time.

- blending and segmenting real and nonsense three letter words from the sound set for example sit, pin, pat.
