This resource shares the life cycle of the buuja buuja, the Wiradjuri word for butterfly, and is designed to support learning through visual storytelling, language, and listening. It honours the natural cycles of growth and transformation – just like our children and communities.
Each stage of the buuja buuja's journey is matched with an image. Students are invited to match each image to the correct stage in the life cycle. You will also find a QR code to scan, where students and educators can hear Aunty Caroline speak the Wiradjuri words for each stage. This listening experience strengthens cultural connection and supports Aboriginal language revival.
The recource features the four key stages of the buuja buuja's life cycle: gulwarr – egg; durrumbin, ginma – caterpillar; dubi – chrysalis; buuja buuja – butterfly.
Cultural note: acknowledging Wiradjuri Language speakers Dr. Stan Grant, Elizabeth Grant and Midnight Brydon for sharing their Cultural Knowledge.
The life of the buuja buuja reminds us to take our time, grow slowly, and honour the changes we go through. Just like the butterfly, our children carry strength, beauty, and resilience in their journey.
